Strategic Planning Training Magnetizes Memebers' Staff

Phnom Penh, 16 October 2009— COSECAM has organized a five-day training course on the Strategic Planning for Public and Non-Profit Organizations in Phnom Penh, starting October 12, fulfilling its objective of improving the functioning of its membership organizations and the capacity of their staff.

"This topic is very important for managerial and senior staff of NGOs to know clearly about what the strategic planning is," said Mr. Em Poul, Institutional Human Resources Development Program Officer.

Sponsored by the Spanish-based ANESVAD in the framework of the CETHCam project, the course was participated by 26 trainees from various local non-governmental organizations working in the field of prevention and protection which include combating sexual abuses, exploitation, trafficking in persons, violence and irregular migration.

Those organizations include Cambodian Women's Crisis Center, Healthcare Center for Children, Child Rights Foundation, Cambodian Children Against Starvation and Violence Association, Goutte d'Eau Neak Loeung, Cambodian Women's Development Center, Cambodian Center for the Protection of Child Rights, Komar Rik Reay, Kokyo naki Kodomotachi, Meatophum Ko'Mah, Goutte d' Poipet, and Cambodian Hope Organization.

This strategic planning course is one of the eight courses in Project Implementation training program, prioritized by NGOs, which are members of the Coalition, for this year. Report on Training Need Assessment, TNA, conducted by the IHRD of COSECAM, discovered that senior staff of membership organizations are more interested in this topic and enthusiastic about undertaking a strategic planning.

Trainer of the course, Mr. Tat Puthsodary, PhD candidate in Social Psychology, Social Work and Social Policy at the University of South Australia, said the strategic planning workshop is designed to help the participants understand what the strategic planning is, its concept, processes, and its success and failure.

"Therefore the trainees could think, analyze and synthesize strategically, decide and respond effectively to their organizational environment," said Mr. Puthsodary.

One of the participants, Mr. Ban Sambath, Field Project Supervisor of Economic Development Support to Vulnerable and Trafficked Persons (EDVP) of COSECAM in Kampong Cham stressed the importance of this course for project implementation, adding that although he is not in the position to develop the strategic plan, he is willing to know its basis.

"I think it's very important for me and other participants. If we don't know the basis, we will also find it hard to implement the project although we are just the implementing people,"said Mr. Sambath

Mr. Puthsodary suggests that to avoid the failure of applying the strategic planning concept, the management level support the strategic planning initiatives by their staff and give them the opportunity to participate in undertaking strategic planning process at their organizations.
