NGOs, Cambodia, Thailand to Mark Anti-Human Trafficking Day
Phnom Penh, 17 November 2009— COSECAM and Border Issues Group for Children (BIG C) in collaboration with the Cambodian and Thailand authorities will jointly organize an anti-trafficking of women and children campaign on December 12, 2009, in Cambodia's northwestern city of Poipet near the Thai border, to mark the annual anti-human trafficking day, with estimated thousands of people are expected to join.
The campaign is aimed at strengthening the network of local and international nongovernmental organizations, government institutions and communities in order to combat human trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation of children and women along Cambodia-Thai border by raising awareness and by encouraging them to peer educate others in the community to combat commercial sexual exploration and trafficking of women and children.
The campaign will be participated by H.E. Chou Bun Eng, Secretary of State, Ministry of Interior and also the General Secretary of the National Committee to Lead the Suppression of Human Trafficking, Smuggling, Labor Exploitation and Sexual Exploitation in Women and Children, Banteay Meanchey Governor, Poipet Municipal Governor, and Thailand's Srash Keo Governor who will all give speech to the participating groups.
1,500 target groups comprising of school students, children, people in the communities, local authorities, monks, police and other NGOs within the areas along the Cambodian-Thai border are expected to participate in this annual event.
The participants will be gathering at an appointed location in the morning and marching to Ovachin Tin Casino where the campaign will be kicked off. Children from COSECAM will sing anti-human trafficking songs and perform human-trafficking related drama or plays. The campaign will be followed by a concert and spots to further disseminate the messages about human trafficking.
