Girls Speak Out Workshop

On 18th Novemer 2007, the Advocacy Program Team, COSECAM, conducted a one-day-workshop at COSECAM Office for the Girls Speak Out (GSO) group which included participants from HCC, KMR, CWDA, KnK, Hagar and Garment Factory. The workshop started at 8 o’clock and ended at five o’clock.

The objectives of the workshop were:

  • To review what the GSO group has achieved since the last workshop and brainstorm new activities for 2008
  • To provide and identify new advocacy methods particularly focusing on advocacy through the media
  • To identify activities for celebration of Human Rights Day (December 10) and raise awareness about human rights, and
  • To practice singing advocacy songs.

Mr. Keo Chamroeun, Advocacy and Research Program Officer, COSECAM, opened the workshop by welcoming and introducing facilitators to participants and presenting the workshop objectives.

Ms. Kao Sokdeth, IHRD Program Assistant, COSECAM, facilitated review of actievements since the last workshop and helped the group brainstorm new initiatives for 2008.

Following this , Mr. Ny KeoPonha, Advocacy and Research Program Assistant, COSECAM, disscussed different Advocacy Methods which could be employed by the group and provided a presentation of the advocacy methods which mainly focused on how to attract the media for an advocacy campaign.

Ms. Paula Stratton, Technical Adviser for COSECAM from Australia, introduced the concept of human rights and discussed the law both internationally and domestically in order to raise awareness and understanding of legal concepts and the current situation. She used some practical exercises to ensure the group understood.

Icebreaker and fun activities were integrated through the workshop such as advocacy songs practices to keep energy levels up.

Results from the workshop were positive. Participants indicated that a number of interesting topics were covered and that they gained a lot of knowledge from the workshop.
