COSECAM Organized Girls Speak Out Workshop
The Advocacy Program Team of COSECAM held a one-day Girls Speak Out Workshop for 28 girl victims of trafficking and exploitation on March 23, 2008 from 8:00 to 17:00 at the COSECAM training room. The participants were from HCC, KMR, CWDA, KnK, CCPCR, Goutte D’eau and Garment Factory.
The objectives of the workshop were to:
- Provide participants with information and enhance their understanding of trafficking, the law and child rights.
- Provide the more experienced participants with an opportunity to facilitate session, share their stories and educate the less experienced participants on common tactics of traffickers.
- Empower the notion of choice by teaching participants how to make a good and informed decision.
- Brainstorm new activities for the next workshop and evaluate this workshop.
Mr. Keo Chamroeun, Advocacy and Research Program Officer, COSECAM, opened the workshop by welcoming and introducing facilitators to participants and presenting the workshop objectives.
Ms. Paula Stratton, Technical Advisor to Advocacy Program, led participants in a quick10 minute meditation following on from the meditation training provided in last Workshop. Mr. Nop Nath, Program Coordinator from KNKS then briefly explained to the group some of benefits of meditation.
Ms. Paula Stratton presented a child rights session which focused on four major rights: the right to survival; the right to participation; the right to development; and the right to protection. She also discussed the concept of child trafficking by dividing participants into small groups to brainstorm and discuss foundational issues such as: who is a child; the definition of trafficking; who is a trafficker; why children are trafficked and what makes children vulnerable to trafficking. At the end of her session, she played a short video movie made by MTV about a woman who is trafficked to be prostitute in the city and a man who is exploited and forced to work without salary and live in very poor condition.
In the afternoon, Mr. Ny KeoPonha, Public Relations Officer of COSECAM, led two participants – Miss Ly Sreylis and Miss Kong Chantha – to facilitate a session about Tactics of a Trafficker. Participants were divided into small groups to discuss this topic.
Mr. Nop Nat discussed the concept of decision making, as well as how to make the right decision and difficulties that may arise from making the wrong decision. He talked about a case study of a poor girl who sells candy to help support her family. In the case study, a pimp tries to convince the girl to be a prostitute so that she can earn a lot of money to help her family, and the views of her father, uncle, sister, brother, friend and neighbor were discussed. The facilitator then asked the participants to put themselves in the girl's shoes and make a decision. The decisions made by the participants and how those decisions were reached by the participants were discussed.
In the last session of the day, Ms. Kao Sokdeth, IHRD Program Assistant of COSECAM recorded new initiatives proposed by the participants and prioritized them for the next workshop. After that, participants completed a workshop Evaluation Form.
