Girls Speak Out Sunday Workshop
A Sunday workshop for Girls Speak Out project took place at the COSECAM Office on 7 June 2009. 21 girls and 7 care takers were invited to participate in the discussion workshop. 3 girls were absent. The participants were from 6 NGOs based in Phnom Penh and the provinces. The specific objectives of the workshop were:
- To provide an update of the achievements of the Peer Educator Group;
- To capacity build the girl’s advocacy and lobbying skills;
- And to strengthen the facilitation skills for Peer Educator Group
The workshop begun with a welcome address thanking the participants for attending. The first agenda item was an update of the Peer Educator Group’s achievements. The girls presented their achievements for last month in groups and individually. Some peer groups organized formal discussions on human trafficking and domestic violence with their colleagues at the shelters, while others discussed these issues informally at schools, shops and shelters. In order to deal with challenges faced in disseminating information, the group also shared their best practice methods on how to deal with those challenges. These included building good relationships with the audience, limiting participant numbers, holding the discussions in appropriate places and grouping participants by age.
Next, Mr. CHUM Phally, Technical Coordinator, led a group discussion about advocacy and lobbying skills. Firstly, he asked the definition of these terms and what is different between advocacy and lobbying. He also reflected on what it takes to be a good peer educator, what is the linkage between Peer Educators and advocacy and lobbying, and how does it work for GSO. The girls concluded that in order to effective and efficient advocators and lobbyists, they have to identify the problem, provide clear information, target their audiences, have specific objectives and have access to resources. After the discussion, the girls organized a role play in which they advocated and lobbied the government of Cambodia on human trafficking. All participants gave feedback on the role play and improved some areas.
Mr. KEO Sam Oeun, Advocacy Program Officer, then reviewed the facilitation skills that were shared at the previous workshop. The girls were divided into small groups and given tasks on how to prepare facilitation, what methodologies they should use and how to be an effective facilitator. Each group presented their results and asked for comments from the whole group. Next, all participants were again divided into small groups to develop monthly work plans and a plenary presentation. An evaluation was also conducted in terms of the strength and weakness of the workshops, areas that need improvement and suggestions for future workshops. Mr. Eduard C. Kees de Bouter from MAAGDENHUIS participated in this process. He was pleased to see how much the girls had improved and shared the knowledge they have gained from the workshop to their colleagues. He urged the girls to continue their commitment and share their good practice among group and peers.
Through this workshop, the girls performed their roles well. They shared and organized formal and non-formal discussion with colleagues at schools, shelters, shops, and community. This indicates that the girls were willing and able to disseminate their knowledge to outsiders. The girls also obtained more knowledge on advocacy and lobbying and improved their facilitation skills. They have been applying these skills when they organize peer discussion sessions.
