GSO Girls Elect Their First Leader
In a move to improve the organization of COSECAM Girls Speak Out (GSO) group, the girl advocates recently elected their first team leader to facilitate their activities in fighting sexual exploitation of children and human trafficking.
COSECAM's Research and Advocacy Program said that the new arrangement of the GSO group was aimed at empowering the girls to independently initiate and implement various plans for the benefits of the group.
The elected team leader, Chantha, joined the GSO project in 2005 when she was with KnK Network Cambodia in Battambang province. In 2007, after two years she was reintegrated and moved back to Phnom Penh.
Chantha received 14 out of 21 votes, and was elected from seven candidates. Meanwhile, two other candidates were elected as the deputy and group secretary. They will all serve a one-year term.
Chantha, who was a victim of domestic violence committed by her late stepfather, is 19 years old and currently a freshman at a university in Phnom Penhstudying English literature.
She also works as a secretary for a private company in Phnom Penh, and although she was reintegrated, Chantha continues to receive support from KnK Network Cambodia for her studies at University.
In response to her election as the team leader, Chantha said, "I feel so proud. I will try to develop myself. I've made a pledge in front of all the other members that I will do my best to communicate with outside groups. I will try to search for various documents which will help develop our group. I will also help members who have lesser knowledge".
Mrs. Sokhan Serey Vethia, Research and Advocacy Officer, said Chantha was elected because most of the girls in the group saw her as a qualified candidate.
"She is qualified for the position. She goes to University, and she is more mature and confident. She also possesses computer skills," said Mrs. Sokhan Serey Vethia.
Mrs. Serey Vethia said that the responsibilities of the GSO team leader was to facilitate and share knowledge and information amongst the group, supervise GSO members, prepare reports about the group, and communicate with other peer educators.
The elected deputy, Sovanna, made a pledge in front of the group that, "I will help in facilitating team work, seek new initiatives and assist the work of the leader to achieve progress among GSO team."
"I will push for the progress in the teamwork," pledged the elected secretary, Sothary.
The Girls Speak Out project bring together young victims of trafficking and exploitation to network and support each other as well as brainstorming ways to address child trafficking and child sexual exploitation in Cambodia.
